HT7. Here’s what you need to know about tonsil stones – the weird pimple-like growths in your throat

Bad breath could be a sign of tonsil stones, which are caused by food, bacteria, or minerals like calcium getting trapped in the folds of the tonsils. These stones, which have a cheese-like texture, typically cause bad breath and sometimes throat discomfort but generally have few other symptoms.

Tonsil stones affect about 10% of people and often resolve on their own. Other symptoms may include a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, metallic taste, ear pain, persistent coughing, or tonsil infections. Diagnosis is usually done through a simple throat examination.

Treatment options include self-removal with a cotton swab or saltwater gargles, medicated mouthwashes, or oral irrigators. In severe cases, surgery may be needed to remove the tonsils. Prevention involves regular saltwater rinses, good oral hygiene, and managing allergies. Always consult a doctor if you’re unsure.
